SJ/T 11948-2024 Officially Released
The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) recently issued Announcement No. 39 of 2024, approving 486 industry standards, including SJ/T 11948-2024: Seismic Protection Technical Specifications for Electronic Information Equipment Installation Engineering. This new standard, which will take effect on April 1, 2025, was developed with contributions from Ningbo Vich Technology Co., Ltd..
Enhancing Seismic Safety Through Standardization
In line with China’s Earthquake Prevention and Disaster Reduction Law, which emphasizes “prevention first”, the SJ/T 11948-2024 standard aims to ensure that electronic information equipment installations can maintain functionality during seismic events or be quickly restored afterward, thereby reducing economic losses.
The standard outlines seven key chapters and three appendices, covering:
- General principles
- Terminology and symbols
- Fundamental requirements
- Seismic design
- Isolation design
- Installation and acceptance
- Maintenance
With a systematic approach to seismic protection, the standard promotes the planning, design, installation, and maintenance of electronic information equipment under a unified regulatory framework.
Addressing Increasing Seismic Risks
China has experienced a surge in seismic activity in recent months. According to the China Earthquake Administration, earthquakes have struck Tibet, Ningxia, Xinjiang, and Sichuan since January 1, 2025, resulting in significant losses for businesses and individuals. The most severe was a magnitude 6.8 earthquake in Dingri County, Shigatse, Tibet, on January 7, which has drawn national attention.
How Can We Minimize Earthquake-Induced Losses?
A key solution lies in seismic support systems, which are designed to mitigate damage and enhance safety for various infrastructure components.
Understanding Seismic Support Systems
What Are Seismic Supports?
Seismic support systems are designed to limit displacement, control vibration, and transfer seismic loads to structural components. These systems reinforce water supply, drainage, fire protection, heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), gas, power, and communication facilities. Properly installed seismic supports help reduce damage and secondary disasters, ultimately protecting lives and property.
How Do Seismic Supports Work?
Seismic waves are classified into three types:
Primary Waves (P-Waves): Vertical compression waves causing up-and-down motion.
Secondary Waves (S-Waves): Shear waves causing horizontal shaking, with stronger destructive force.
Surface Waves: A combination of P-Waves and S-Waves, causing the most severe damage.
Unlike traditional brackets, which only bear vertical loads (effective for mitigating P-Waves), seismic supports feature a diagonal brace structure based on the stability of triangles. This enables them to absorb both vertical and horizontal forces, effectively countering all three types of seismic waves. This ensures that structures achieve the “no damage in minor quakes, repairable in moderate quakes, and collapse-resistant in major quakes” safety principle.
Types of Seismic Supports and Their Applications
